Altruition

The Challenge

Altruition is a registered Canadian charity that helps British Columbian high school students facing financial barriers access post-secondary education. Their chairperson, Kevin Campbell, approached Midstride with a specific need: a web application that would let students log volunteering hours with eligible charities and earn scholarship credit based on time contributed.

Midstride recognized the potential impact and partnered closely with Altruition to scope, design, and build a solution tailored to their operations.

The Application

Launched in 2020, the platform serves three user types: students tracking hours, organizations confirming volunteer work, and Altruition administrators managing the entire program.

The admin dashboard provides tools to moderate accounts, review logged hours, generate financial reports, and approve scholarships. Behind the scenes, the application enforces eligibility rules — ensuring students remain in good standing and meet all minimum requirements before scholarship funds are released.

Building

Roughly one-third of the project was devoted to upfront requirements and discovery through a visual wireframing process. Another third went to design and development, and the final third to testing and quality assurance.

Throughout development, Midstride worked closely with Altruition to ensure the application matched their exact specifications — iterating on feedback rather than building in isolation.

Results

Since launch, Altruition has approved over $200,000 in scholarship funds and logged more than 10,000 volunteering hours through the platform. The application has helped students across British Columbia overcome financial barriers to post-secondary education.
